Three friends team up to ease ‘period poverty’ by donating sanitary pads to pupils

Ekurhuleni- Tswaragano Primary school teachers felt motivated and cherished on Friday, 29 July when their former learners, Lawrence Gumede, Siyabonga Nzima and Mfundo Ntuli visited the school bearing gifts to show their appreciation.

The 3 guys saw it necessary to acknowledge the vital role their teacher’s played in shaping the kind of men they turned out to be.

In partnership with Maphindi’s day care, the young men donated over 100 sanitary towels for the grade 7 learners and prepared a mouth-watering lunch for the grade R learners.

The school principal, Josephine M. Matlou was overwhelmed by her former learner’s effort and took the opportunity to encourage her currents students to learn from this good gesture and go to the world and represent Tswaragano Primary School.

“Today we are reaping the fruits of our labor, the foundation our teachers laid has blossomed beautiful through the lives of these young men. In our assemblies we always preach about sharing and giving and clearly these young men heard and kept the sermons in their hearts,” she said.

“We have a challenge of our learners missing school because they don’t have means when that time of the month comes, this will definitely help and dignify our girls,” she further stated.

Speaking during the handover Mfundo Ntuli said that they wanted to inspire the learners and attest to them that they can achieve anything they set their minds on.

“I was once a learner here and I want to tell you guys that your dreams are valid and achievable, do not let your background discourage you,” he said.

The school’s deputy principal, Melba Majadibodu said that as the school they were excited about the good gesture done by their former learners.

“I would like to appreciate the effort and the sacrifice to bring such a significant to our girl child lives. We that this good act of kindness does not end here but it continues, what these young men have done will go a long way.”

Lawrence Gumede said it was hard to find sponsor, so they had to empty their pocket to ensure that they were able to make a difference.

“Our hearts where in the right place, we struggled to get sponsors but that did not stop us from making this a reality, I would like to appreciate Mfundo’s colleagues who donated sanitary towels”

“This is a start of many projects we want to do we our school, this where our foundation was properly laid therefore, we want to always remember and cherish those that taught us the way,’ he said.

Betty Skosana, the owner and founder of Maphindi’s Daycare was a grade R teacher in the school from 1996 until 2003 when she left the school to open her own Centre.

“When the young men approached me, I was excited because I was once their grade R teacher and so I decided I would join the great cause a prepare a delicious meal for the grade R learner.”

Skosana who is a philanthropist has feature in many projects that aims in uplifting the community of Mpilisweni which is an informal settlement in Thokoza.
