During the inspection, the officers discovered an apparent Road Traffic Act transgression. However, instead of issuing a fine, they made demands for a R2 000 gratification. Unbeknownst to them, the driver of the truck informed his employer about this arrangement, who immediately alerted the police.
An entrapment operation was swiftly conducted, resulting in the arrest of the three officers. They are now expected to appear in the Kroonstad Magistrates’ court on Monday, 16 October 2023 to face charges of corruption.
Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, the Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), expressed her appreciation to the truck owner for reporting the crime. She emphasized that law enforcement officers should be aware that the Hawks are closely monitoring their actions.
“Law enforcement officers must know that the Hawks have a bird’s view of their actions. Anytime they accept a bribe, they could be walking into a trap,” she warns.
