Three suspects have been arrested following the alleged kidnapping of a 23-year-old man in Bellville on Thursday. The arrests were carried out by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) National Intervention Unit (NIU).

According to a preliminary report, the victim was walking along a street when he was confronted by four suspects who forced him into their vehicle and sped off.

While fleeing, the suspects’ vehicle drove past members of the NIU, who immediately gave chase. The suspects later abandoned their vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but police managed to apprehend three of them. One suspect remains at large.

Officers recovered the victim’s belongings and an imitation firearm allegedly used during the commission of the crime.

The NIU members are currently deployed in the Western Cape as part of Operation Lockdown III, a national initiative aimed at combating violent crime and drug trafficking in hotspot areas.
