  • Three Lesotho nationals have been arrested after a minibus travelling from Johannesburg to Lesotho was ambushed on the R59 near Meyerton, leaving six people dead.
  • Police say the attack was unprovoked, with the suspects allegedly opening fire from a white Nissan Juke.
  • Eighteen others were injured and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Three Lesotho nationals have been arrested following a mass shooting on the R59 near Meyerton, south of Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.

This as six people were fatally shot when the minibus they were travelling in was ambushed by a group of suspects.

Details surrounding the tragic incident remain unclear at this stage, but both the victims and the suspects are Lesotho nationals.

Deputy provincial police commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said a white Nissan Juke approached the minibus, which was travelling from Park Station in Johannesburg to Lesotho.

“They started shooting at the minibus unprovoked. The driver tried to avoid them and push them off the road so they wouldn’t continue shooting and causing harm,” Kekana said.

“Fortunately, he managed to distract them. The Juke crossed over the bridge and the passengers who were shooting jumped out of their vehicle.”

Eighteen other people were injured during the shooting and after the minibus rolled. They are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Kekana says, the Nissan Juke that was used to execute this crime was reported stolen in Mpumalanga, last year.

The motive of the shooting is under police investigation.
