  • Nine Free State police officers appeared in court on Monday and were released on bail following their arrest for a mass shooting incident.
  • The accused, members of the Bultfontein Public Order Policing (POP) unit, allegedly killed three civilians and a fellow officer during a domestic dispute call.
  • Forensic evidence from the 2024 crime scene revealed 43 spent cartridges after the tactical team allegedly opened fire inside a barricaded home.

The Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to nine police officers from the Free State following their arrest on four counts of murder.

The group, consisting of three sergeants and six constables from the local Public Order Policing (POP) unit, were taken into custody on Saturday by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The charges stem from a chaotic incident in Phahameng township in September 2024. Officers responded to a domestic dispute where family members had reportedly barricaded themselves inside a residence to avoid arrest.

IPID investigators allege that the officers executed a tactical entry and discharged their firearms within the property, resulting in a bloodbath.

The shooting claimed the lives of three civilians and one of the unit’s own members, Constable Mojalefa Borole, who was on duty at the time.

A spokesperson for IPID confirmed that investigators recovered 43 empty cartridge cases from the scene, suggesting a high volume of fire. The case has sparked significant scrutiny over the unit’s use of force and tactical decision-making during the fatal confrontation.
