‘They Would Have Asked What Weed You’re Smoking’

AmaZulu chairperson Sandile Zungu believes it is time the club takes its place in the top four clubs of South African football.

On 2 October it marked two years since Zungu bought AmaZulu’s status from the Sokhela family in 2020.

Zungu, who revealed his plans on the same day in 2020 that he wants to revive the sleeping giants to the top of the tree in SA, has not changed an inch from his stance. As the club marked the two year anniversary of the ownership change almost two weeks ago, it was also the same day that Usuthu was celebrating its 90th birthday. On that day too, Usuthu played a bizarre match against Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg at FNB Stadium, getting 1-1 draw.

Victor Gomes, in charge of the game, sent off two Usuthu players – Veluyeke Zulu and Gabadinho Mhango, while club goalkeeper coach Johan Abselon was also sent off – the latter two from the sidelines. These two sides will meet again in the second-leg at the Moses Mabhida Stadium later this month.

Interestingly, the final on 5 November will also take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the home venue of Usuthu. AmaZulu will hope to reach their first-ever top eight final in the PSL era.

“That day (2 October) is very important to us because we have called it Usuthu Day, and we are approaching 100 years (the club’s centenary),” Zungu told iDiski Times.

“The next 10 years are very important because we want to show that Usuthu is one of the top four clubs in the PSL. You wouldn’t say this three years ago. No one was going to believe you and they would have said ‘what weed you smoked so that we can all smoke it?’

“The club was known as old but it was not known as a big club. Yes, we are old but we should be a big club on the field as well.”
