Fans of the iconic South African music genre, Kwaito, will soon have the opportunity to experience a sense of nostalgia as the legendary musician Thebe celebrates a milestone in entertainment.
Known for hit songs like Lenyora, Bula Buti and Groovers Prayer, Thebe has built himself quite a reputation as one of the original godfathers of the kwaito genre. Despite it growing out of popularity for the now prominent amapiano and gqom that are currently taking the world by storm, the old time favourite maintains a special place in the hearts of many.
This year marks Thebe’s 30th year in the music industry, and to celebrate his three-decade-long journey, he has decided to host a massive celebration. The Legend Tour features star-studded performances by many of the country’s top artists.
The event is set to take place on September 27 at The Ridge Casino in Emalahleni, with performances by Mdu Masilela, Zola, Professor, Unathi, DJ Cleo, Oskido, and DJ Ganyani.
The show promises to take attendees on a nostalgic journey, while simultaneously accommodating DJ sets and tributes that capture three decades of rhythm, resilience, and musical magic.
“This tour is not just about me — it’s a celebration of our music culture, the fans who’ve been with us through the years, and the legacy of kwaito and South African sounds,” he said in conversation with news publication TshisaLive.
Speaking to SowetanLive, he emphasised that kwaito will always remain relevant.
“Kwaito will never die. It is part of South Africa and a part of me.” he said.
