Both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have climbed into the top 10 goal scorers in World Cup history following their standout performances in Qatar.
Mbappe finished the tournament as top goal scorer, lifting the Golden Boot after netting eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final – which was only the second hat-trick in World Cup finals alongside Geoff Hurst’s from 1966.
However, while Mbappe didn’t lift the main trophy, Messi lead Argentina to their third title with seven goals in Qatar. His exploits earned him the Golden Ball and saw him lift the Jules Rimet trophy.
Overall, Messi has now scored 13 goals across four World Cups, with only three players having scored more. Messi is also on par with French legend Just Fonteine, who netted all his across just six games at the 1958 tournament.
Mbappe also climbed into the top 10 and has now scored 12 goals in just two World Cup editions, as many as legendary Brazil striker Pele. The 23-year-old seems destined to break the record of Miroslav Klose, who leads the ranking with 16 goals in four editions.
The 2014 World Cup winner is followed by Ronaldo Nazario, who has scored 15 times, while Gerd Muller has scored 14 times.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on climbing into the top 10 goal scorers in World Cup history after netting just once in Qatar despite becoming the only player in football history to score five different World Cups.
