The weight of a 58.5% national youth unemployment rate is a heavy burden to carry, but for the young people of Tshwane, a new digital doorway has swung open.
On Thursday, at the Leadership and Management Academy in Pretoria West, the City of Tshwane officially launched the Ithuba Portal, an innovative platform designed to turn the tide for the city’s under-35 population.
For many, the barrier to employment isn’t a lack of talent, but a lack of access.
The Ithuba Portal acts as a central nervous system for opportunity, streamlining everything from driver’s licenses and business permits to internships and high-level skills training.
It is a direct response to a local demographic where more than half of the residents are youth, many of whom have felt sidelined by the traditional economy.
City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya delivered a stirring message at the launch, insisting that “talent must never be wasted because access is denied.”
By prioritizing city residents, the program aims to create 30,000 opportunities over the next three years.
