Stellenbosch FC left Tshwane with a point after a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.
The result keeps the title race tight, with Kabo Yellow dropping points at home in a game where they had to work hard against a disciplined Stellenbosch side.
STELLENBOSCH FC EXECUTE GAME PLAN AGAINST SUNDOWNS
Gavin Hunt made a tactical decision before kick-off, starting the match without a recognised striker. The approach was aimed at keeping the team compact and organised defensively.
“Fantastic performance from us. I thought we had plan. We came here and wanted to play. We played with no strikers. Fantastic,” enthused the veteran coach.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STRUGGLE TO FINISH CHANCES
Sundowns had periods of control in possession and created several attacking situations, but were unable to fully break down Stellenbosch for extended spells.
As the match progressed, Stellenbosch remained structured and looked to threaten in transition when opportunities opened up.
“We sat in a block, and I thought we had chances of winning the game. Devin [Titus] should have scored there,” Hunt said
“So, the longer the game went… we went down 1-0, I always knew we will get into it. We needed to get a chance. We did get, we could have won at the end, which is a bit frustrating.”

STELLENBOSCH TAKE A POINT AWAY FROM TSHWANE
Stellenbosch showed discipline throughout the match and managed to contain Sundowns in key moments, especially in the second half.
“No one gave us a chance, so fantastic performance from some of the kids, young ones. We move on,” Hunt added.
Coming up next for Stellies is a trip to Limpopo to battle Polokwane City on Sunday at 15:00, while Sundowns will travel to the North Coast to battle Richards Bay FC next Wednesday 26 April.
