The 11 FIFA Puskás Award Nominees Revealed
FIFA have announced the 11 nominees for this year’s Puskas Award, with Yusuf Maart missing out despite his wonder goal from his own half against Orlando Pirates.
Every year FIFA honours the most outstanding goal, with the award being named after the legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskás, famed for his glorious individual strikes, and celebrates the year’s most spectacular goal.
This year, FIFA’s expert panel selected 11 goals from the year 2022, including Kylian Mbappe’s audacious volley against Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final.
Richarlison’s bicycle kick from Brazil’s World Cup opener against Serbia also made the list, while Dimitri Payet’s stunning strike against PAOK in the UEFA Conference League is seen as one of the favourites to lift this year’s accolade.
Fans can cast their votes on FIFA’s website until 3 February. FIFA will announce the three finalists in early February 2023.
Sadly, South Africa will not have another nominee, with Maart’s wonder goal against Pirates missing out on the shortlist, despite being acknowledged by FIFA’s social media team last year.
