Thabo Cele Opens Up On Chiefs Exit And Sundowns ‘Blessing’
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thabo Cele has opened up about the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure from Kaizer Chiefs before making the move to the Brazilians.
The 29-year-old was left behind when Chiefs travelled abroad for their pre-season camp as negotiations between the two clubs over compensation delayed his transfer.
Despite the uncertainty, Cele says he refused to allow the situation to distract him.
“For me, it’s always been the same thing: to keep on working hard, focus on myself and forget the distractions that are outside,” Cele said.
The midfielder revealed that his journey to the top has always been driven by his desire to improve himself.
“Since growing up, when I was young, I always wanted to find myself and work to be in this kind of position. So, me being here, it’s massive and also a motivation to go to the next level.”
Cele’s move to Sundowns has already proved rewarding, with the midfielder now celebrating his first trophy with the club.
Sundowns defeated Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium to claim their second trophy of the season.
Cele described being part of the star-studded Sundowns squad as a blessing.
“First of all, I’d like to give thanks to the most high for this moment, this opportunity,” he said.
“It’s a blessing to be part of this team because it’s a team that’s always looking for more. And today, we went into the game looking to win the final because it’s been a while since we won this MTN8.
