Munei Netsharotha, a Grade 11 student from Tshivhase Secondary School near Thohoyandou, has made a car that runs on hydrogen gas using scrap metal and zinc.
Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya visited Netsharotha at home on Thursday in Makhuvha village to support his dream of becoming a top inventor.
“I am so happy seeing that my goals and dreams are moving towards the right path,” Netsharotha told Scrolla.Africa. “But I still need to put in more work to become one of the best innovators in the country or globally – only time will tell.
“I am always thinking of new ideas, and I am always willing to try and implement the ideas in my head to become a reality. I believe there is still more to come from me as I still have so many ideas I want to put into reality,” he said.
Netsharotha will show his invention at the National Science Week in Bloemfontein this weekend.
Matome Taueatsoala, the MEC’s spokesperson, said: “This is a proud moment for the people of Limpopo, especially in Vhembe, and a great motivation to all the learners in the province that it is possible for them to become innovators. One does not need to be from China or the USA to become an innovator.
“Munei deserves all our support as a department and needs support from the people of Limpopo to achieve all his dreams. As a department, we will make sure that he gets all the support he needs,” said Taueatsoala.
Resident Marks Masindi said Netsharotha is inspiring other rural students.
“He is putting our village on the map. In the long run, this will serve as a great motivation to other learners that achieving your dreams is possible and does not matter where you come from,” Masindi said.
