A 16-year-old boy from Tsolo in the Eastern Cape was arrested for stoning his 83-year-old grandmother to death on Sunday.
The boy had originally told police and neighbours that two masked men on horseback had entered their home on Thursday, demanding money.
When his grandmother said she had no money, he claimed they hit her on the head with rocks, killing her.
The elderly woman, Gogo Tsawe, relied only on her pension, which she was due to receive soon.
“According to the information, her grandson alerted the neighbours about the incident, who then called the police. The investigation led police to arrest the grandson as a suspect in the murder case,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mawisa.
He will appear in the Tsolo Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mawisa said investigations showed that the teenager was the one who killed his grandmother.
Human rights activist Petros Majola called the incident shocking and asked communities to protect the elderly.
“It is absolutely disgraceful that the grandson led his family to believe that he was a survivor of this tragic ordeal while he knew exactly what happened to his grandmother. We call on everyone to play their part in protecting the elderly,” Majola said.
