Cape Town Taxi Violence

On Wednesday, members of City of Joburg Mayoral Committee, Funzi Ngobeni and David Tembe, responsible for transport and safety, were at Park Station speaking with taxi operators about the industry’s responsibility in maintaining road safety.

Law enforcement officials are actively promoting safe driving practices on the country’s roads to decrease deaths ahead of the Easter weekend.

Ngobeni said a lot many people were dying on the country’s roads and that the primary objective heading into the Easter weekend was to reduce fatalities.

“We hope the road fatalities will not go high, the city is working very closely with police in Gauteng and traffic police have roadblocks across the province,” he said.

Ngobeni added that drinking and driving were the contributing factors.

“It’s very important that we must continue preaching the message, we must not get tired of coming with these campaigns, coming to taxi ranks, and speaking to individuals. They make a difference it may not show now, it may not be immediate but down the line, people will remember what you said to them,” he said.

Last year at this time, 235 people died on South African roads, with Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal having the highest number of incidents.
