Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has added another piece of silverware to his growing trophy cabinet with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward helped the Red Devils clinch the Egyptian Super Cup at the expense of compatriot Fagrie Lakay’s Pyramids on Friday evening.
Tau lasted almost the entire match at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium as Ahly got the better of Pyramids 1-0 after extra time to lift the Super Cup, their second piece of silverware this season.
PERCY TAU BAGS FOURTH TROPHY WITH AL AHLY
Overall, this was Tau’s fourth trophy with the Egyptian giants after the 2021 CAF Super Cup, the 2021/22 Egypt Super Cup and the 2022 Egypt Cup.
Tau’s Ahly defeated the self same Pyramids 2-1 to clinch the Egytian Cup just a few weeks ago, with Lakay again on the losing side.
Lakay, the former Cape Town City man, started for Pyramids and put in a solid shift upfront until he was subbed off for Tunisian striker Fakhereedine Ben Youssef in the 82nd minute.
Lakay has been slowly regaining his groove and fighting his way back into the Pyramids team after recovering from injury.
The South African, though, couldn’t help his side end Ahly’s dominance over them with Tau’s side walking away victorious.
AHLY DOMINANCE OVER PYRAMIDS
Ahly have beaten Pyramids four times in their last five meetings in the all competitions, with Pyramids’ last win over Ahly coming in the Egyptian Premier League last year.
Pyramids were playing in the Super Cup final as replacements for Zamalek who were meant to face Ahly before withdrawing due to a dispute with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA.
Pyramids were then nominated to face Ahly as replacements after they finished second to Zamalek last season in the league.
Zamalek, the league champion last season, were supposed to face Al Ahly, champions of the Egypt Cup, in the United Arab Emirates.
