Tania Campbell of the DA has been removed as mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni after she was dismissed today via a resolution of no confidence, with 126 councillors voting in favour of her removal and 91 voting against it.

Opposition parties claim Campbell has failed to provide services to Ekurhuleni residents. This is Campbell’s second no-confidence motion.

She was expelled from office in October of last year, but was later reinstated after defeating the ANC’s Jongizizwe Dlabathi with 124 votes out of 224 cast. In exchange for its support in Johannesburg and Tshwane, the EFF has demanded the ANC allow it to run the metro.

According to the EFF’s Dunga, “Campbell has displayed a lot of fails, one of them has been the racial profiling of service delivery and also the lack of apathy and understanding of the financial situation we find ourselves and her reluctance to actually engage in an aggressive revenue enhancing exercise that seeks to at least take down the debtors.”

Meanwhile, ActionSA said it supported Campbell in line with the party’s commitment to keeping the ANC and EFF coalition out of power.

“We also wanted to avoid the installation of one-seat party mayors who serve at the behest of the ANC and EFF, as seen in Johannesburg,” Gauteng chairperson Funzi Ngobeni said.
