Hawks Apprehend Suspects Attempting to Sell Endangered Pangolins at Mahikeng Mall!
On May 30, 2023, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation successfully apprehended four individuals in Mahikeng.
They were caught in the act of trying to sell two Pangolins for R200,000.
Acting on intelligence information, the team tracked down the suspects who were seeking a buyer for these endangered species.The arrest took place at Mahikeng Mall, where the quartet was found in possession of the Pangolins.
The suspects, whose ages range from 29 to 45, are scheduled to appear before the Mahikeng Magistrate’s Court on June 1, 2023.
They will be facing charges related to the violation of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004. This legislation aims to protect and preserve South Africa’s biodiversity, including endangered species like the Pangolin.

After the arrest, the seized Pangolins were transferred to a Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.
These specialized facilities provide crucial care and support for wildlife, ensuring their well-being and, if possible, their eventual release back into their natural habitats.
