Bradley Grobler cancelled out Ronald Pfumbidzai’s opener as SuperSport United and Chippa United drew 1-1 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, in a match which ended with drama as Ricardo Goss was sent off for a moment of madness.

It was an interesting match-up between two coaches with intertwined histories… Gavin Hunt — the most experienced coach currently in the DStv Premiership, back at the club where he won the league for the first time, against the team he coached last.

While Daine Klate, in charge for the first time, against the club where he also first won league medals, and against the coach with who he won leagues with both at SuperSport and Bidvest Wits. Klate has taken on his first head coach role at Chippa, succeeding interim coach Kurt Lentjies, who in turn had replaced Hunt!

There was a good chance for Aubrey Ngoma to put SuperSport in front in the 12th minute, but he was just not able to get his header on target.

However, it was Chippa who would grab the lead as Ronald Pfumbidzai expertly headed in Siphelele Luthuli’s free kick in the 17th minute.

Bradley Grobler, who missed most of last season through injury, forced a save from Loydt Kazapua in the 23rd minute, and Iqraam Rayners went close on the follow-up but hit the woodwork.

Chippa went very close to doubling their lead in the 33rd minute, and again from a set piece, as Roscoe Pietersen just headed off target.

SuperSport were dealt a blow in the 36th minute when captain Onismor Bhasera went off with what looks like a serious injury. Luke Fleurs came on to replace him, while Thulani Hlatshwayo took over the captaincy.

Grant Margeman’s cross-come shot in the 41st minute almost caused problems for Kazapua as it curled goalward, but it hit the crossbar and went over. Rayners blasted over two minutes later, after running onto a good ball from Jamie Webber.

At the break, it remained 1-0 to Chippa.

Kegan Johannes’ tried a shot in the 49th minute, but it went high and wide, while two minutes later Grobler headed just over. It was SuperSport piling on all the pressure and Rayners was off target again in the 54th minute, and a minuter, another effort from the former Stellenbosch player was deflected behind.

Substitute Thabang Sibanyoni fired over in the 56th minute, while at the other end Diego Appollis, who had come on for Chippa, shot over three minutes later.

Finally SuperSport were level, Grobler grabbing his first of the season in the 63rd minute, set up by Rayners after Kazapua had initially saved Ngoma’s attempt.

Another SuperSport substitute, Thapelo Maseko, had his attempt deflected behind in the 71st minute, while Thatayaone Ditlhokwe’s header was cleared by the defence five minutes later.

Grant Margeman, who had been impressive in the middle of the park, went close in the 80th minute from distance but hit the side netting.

The game ended in drama with Ricardo Goss being sent off, after a moment of madness, as he lashed out and punched Pfumbidzai after the  Zimbabwean kicked the ball out of the goalkeeper’s hands.

Ditlhokwe had to go into goal as SuperSport had made all their substitutes, but they were able to hold out with ten men.
