Sundowns will not hand Orlando Pirates the league title

Mamelodi Sundowns are showing no signs of easing the pressure on Orlando Pirates as the race for the Betway Premiership title intensifies.

The Buccaneers went into the AFCON break at the top of the standings, holding a two-point advantage over their long-time rivals and dreaming of ending a 14-year wait for a league title.

Sundowns’ victory after the break has shifted the momentum, with the Brazilians now sitting a point ahead, albeit having played two more matches than Abdeslam Ouaadou’s side.

Pirates face a crucial test on Saturday against Sekhukhune United, with anything less than a win likely to increase the pressure in the title race.

Sundowns puts pressure on Orlando Pirates

Sundowns, meanwhile, have once again underlined their ambition by bolstering their squad with additional South American signings, a clear signal of their determination to defend the league crown.

For Pirates to seriously challenge Masandawana, they will likely need to win at least 14 of their remaining 18 matches, a demanding target in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested second half of the season.

While Miguel Cardoso’s Sundowns have not always been clinical, they remain a formidable force and could hit top gear as the campaign progresses.

A run of consecutive victories from the champions would undoubtedly unsettle their rivals.

Orlando Pirates and Sundowns to battle for the league

The pressure is now firmly on the Buccaneers to respond. Should they maintain their winning momentum, Sundowns may be forced into mistakes, opening the door for the Sea Robbers to finally reclaim the league title.

The next five months will test Pirates more than before. Last year, the Sea Robbers fought but CAF Champions League focus distracted them, which saw them lose out on just the league but the continental competition as well.
