‘Sundowns Wanted To Eliminate Al Ahly’

Egyptian football analyst Khaled Bauomy has made the audacious claim that Mamelodi Sundowns wanted to eliminate Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League.

Masandawana battled with Al Hilal in Sudan on Saturday, in a fixture that was not only about the two sides but included 10-time CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly too.

Al Hilal needed a win against Downs to secure qualification for the knockout stages and eliminate the ‘Red Devils’, while the 1-1 draw has given the Egyptian giants a lifeline and they will now book their knockout stage ticket should they beat Al Hilal on match day six.

Sundowns took the lead in the 66th minute with Khuliso Mudau tapping in a rebound from the Al Hilal goalkeeper Ali Abou. Five minutes later the Sudanese side found an equaliser after Ronwen Williams’ mistake at the back.

The Sudanese champions got an opportunity right at the end when they received a penalty and Athar Eltahir stepped up, but Williams saved the spot-kick, keeping Downs ahead of Al Hilal and Al Ahly’s CAFCL campaign alive.

Bauomy, who is a football analyst in Egypt, took to social media to accuse Sundowns of wanting to eliminate record champions Al Ahly.

“Sundowns did everything to help Al Hilal qualify and eliminate Africa’s bogeyman Al Ahly,” Bauomy said on his Twitter account, as translated by KingFut.

“However, God’s will and the prayers of Al Ahly fans stood against the desire of Sundowns.

“Soon, the response to heaven’s justice will be seen in the stadium that all Africa fears, the Cairo International Stadium.”

Sundowns currently lead Group A with 11 points after five games, followed by Al Hilal on 10 points, while Al Ahly sit on seven and Coton Sport remained on zero. A win by Al Ahly over Al Hilal would see the Egyptian side progress.
