Sundowns Storm Into Nedbank Semis

Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed their place in the last four of the Nedbank Cup, after they beat ABC Motsepe outfit Summerfield Dynamos 5-0 at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

It was a tough night for the minnows, as they not only had to deal with a clinical Sundowns team but also the rainy weather and wet pitch.

As expected Masandawana took control from the opening whistle, with the first shot coming in the fifth minute from Lebo Maboe from range, but it went straight to Bongani Masoga in the Summerfield goal.

And the opening goal came in the seventh minute, Lesedi Kapinga’s cross into the box finding Gaston Sirino, and the Uruguayan got enough on the ball to beat Masoga.

It was 2-0 in the 12th minute, Kapinga scoring this time, a good composed finish with the Summerfield defence in disarray, Neo Maema with the assist.

Maboe forced another save out of Masoga in the 19th minute, while the Summerfield goalkeeper pulled off a great save to deny Kermit Erasmus’ header in the 24th minute.

Aubrey Modiba went close in the 28th minute but, with the goalmouth beckoning, he was denied by Samuel Darpoh who cleared off the line. A Teboho Mokoena shot brushed the crossbar a minute later. Masoga saved from Sirino in the 33rd minute.

Maema forced Masoga into a save in the 39th minute, while the visitors had their first chance in the 43rd minute, but Ricardo Goss saved ’s attempt from the right.

At the break, Sundowns led 2-0 at a wet Loftus.

Summerfield had a glorious chance in the 50th minute, as Ngubane broke free, and rounded the goalkeeper, only for his final effort to strike the upright and bounce clear. 

Instead, Sundowns made it 3-0 a minute later. A defensive slip saw Sundowns gain possession, and Sirino unselfishly set up Erasmus who made no mistake.

It was the same pair who combined in the 64th minute, as Sirino once again set up Erasmus, who added his second to make it 4-0.

Barely minutes after coming onto the pitch, Pavol Safranko made it 5-0 in the 80th minute, heading in Sirino’s free-kick.

Another sub Promise Mkhuma had an attempt in the 85th minute but went wide. Aubrey Modiba’s stoppage-time free-kick went over and 5-0 is how it ended, Sundowns marching into the semis to join Marumo Gallants and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

The final place in the last four will be decided on Sunday when Royal AM host GladAfrica side AmaTuks at the Chatsworth Stadium. The draw will take place after that game.
