Sundowns Secure Sixth Successive DStv Premiership Title

Despite being inactive in league action, Mamelodi Sundowns were confirmed as the 2022/2023 DStv Premiership champions on Saturday night.

Sundowns are preparing to take on Coton Sport in the CAF Champions League group stages this evening, but they will now also be celebrating inside after a record sixth consecutive league title was confirmed.

This was confirmed after SuperSport failed to beat Chippa United in Gqeberha, which means after 24 rounds of league action, Sundowns are the champions, as no team can now mathematically catch them.

It is also a new record, for the earliest-declared champion in PSL history, bettering their own record of winning in 25 rounds, which they did in the 2006/2007 season.

Sundowns have picked up 59 points from 23 games, winning 19 of their league games, drawing two and just losing two. They’ve scored 45 times and only conceded nine so far.

The champions will return to league action on Tuesday evening when they host Cape Town City.

Disclaimer: Sundowns still have seven games to play themselves, but mathematically they didn’t secure the title when all teams had seven matches to play.
