Sundowns Secure Historic Win Over Ahly

Mamelodi Sundowns secured their first-ever win in Cairo over Al Ahly as they took control of Group A in the CAF Champions League on Saturday evening.

Thapelo Morena scored a thunderous effort past returning Ahly captain Mohamed El-Shenaway five minutes from time to secure the historic victory at the fifth time of asking.

It also marked their first goal in Egypt against the reigning champions and their first win over Mosimane since he left the club for the Red Devils back in September 2020.

Ahly looked the stronger side for large spells of the game but it proved to be a tactical masterclass from Masandawana who weren’t looking on the front foot as they usually do in the domestic scene.

Kenny Mweene, at the age of 37 was one of the heroes of the evening too as he made several match-winning saves for the visitors who now lead the group by three points with Al-Merrikh (4) in second with a game in hand.
