Sundowns Rule Out Mayele Move

Mamelodi Sundowns cast an eye on Young Africans SC striker Fiston Mayele but have not been convinced he could improve their current options.

With the recent surgeries of Peter Shalulile and Erwin Saavedra, added to the exit of Kermit Erasmus and Pavol Safranko, Sundowns were left short in the attacking department.

But after scoring eight goals in two games and the emergence of academy graduate Cassius Mailula getting in on the goals with five in his seven appearances, the immediate need to bolster the squad has been lessened.

Mayele popped up on the radar due to his recent exploits in the CAF Champions League with seven goals in four games – but after monitoring him over the past month, the club is said to have felt he’s not mobile enough to fit into the current tactical system.

iDiski Times understands they were not left impressed during a recent visit to Tanzania during their 0-0 draw against Club Africain in their CAF Confederation Cup playoff round first-leg fixture.

While Mayele remains one of the most prolific marksmen on the continent at present, the asking price of Yanga has seen many suitors scared off from a potential move for his services.

It remains to be seen how long Shalulile will be out on the sidelines and what options are available in the domestic league, given their current foreign quota dilemma with all five options currently registered.

The three-time Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot winner, was, however, present at Chloorkop for training on Thursday afternoon and there’s genuine optimism that he could be back when the league restarts on New Years’ eve.
