Sundowns Potential CAFCL Opponents Revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns have learned which teams they could face in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

Masandawana themselves secured top spot in Group B after beating Coton Sport 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

CAF Champions League record champions Al Ahly qualified as second-placed team from Group B after beating Al Hilal 3-0 at home.

The draw for the CAFCL quarter-finals will take place in Cairo on Wednesday, when the group winners will be paired with the runners-up. However, teams from the same group cannot face each other again, meaning Sundowns cannot draw AL Ahly.

As a consequence, only three teams remain in contention to face the newly-crowned DStv Premiership champions, namely: JS Kabylie (Group A), Simba SC (Group C) or CR Belouizdad (Group D).

None of them went through the group stages unbeaten, with Simba even losing thrice, but qualifying behind Raja Athletic Club with three wins.

Kabylie and Belouizdad both won three games, drew one and lost twice, with Rulani Mokwena confirming Sundowns had sent out scouts to watch all eight potential CAFCL opponents.

“We’ve managed to send four analysts already to try to give us a bit of a profile on the next possible opponents in the Champions League,” he told SABC Sport.

“So the next seven opponents will be watched this weekend and it was important that we watch them in a Champions League environment.”
