Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies got their defence of the CAF TotalEnergies Women’s Champions League title off, with a 2-1 win against Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens in Marrakech.

Lelona Daweti scored in each half in the 31st and 56th minutes assisted, by Thalea Smidt and Melinda Kgadiete respectively.

It was a nervy start for the defending champions in group B against one of the tournament debutants who could have taken the lead early through Mary-Ann Ezenagu in the second minute.

Flourish Sabastine also had a chance that was blocked away by Andile Dlamini in the eighth minute.

The Nigerian champions had another opportunity to equalise three minutes after Sundowns scored, and Ornella Touta could have also levelled in the 40th minute but her free-kick went wide.

Four minutes before the halftime break Morifi could have extended Sundowns’ lead with a cross from the left but the goalkeeper read it well and punched it away.

Early in second half Boitumelo Rabale had a chance to extend the lead but her shot was wide however 10 minutes into the second half Kgadiete found Daweti who didn’t miss an open net to make it 2-0.

Nine minutes from time Mary-Magdeline Anjor scored the consolation for the Queens.

It was a nervy final few minutes for Jerry Tshabalala’s team as Queens desperately sought the equaliser, but they held on for the win against the industrious Nigerians.
