Sundowns Boss Admits Shalulile Mindgames

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has admitted the Masandawana technical team tried to play mind games over the availability of Peter Shalulile ahead of their MTN8 semi-final second leg against Orlando Pirates.

The defending champions were missing their main striker, with both Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena being cryptic about Shalulile’s availability ahead of the tie.

However, the striker was not ready to make the squad, raising questions whether he’ll be sidelined for a longer period.

“For sure, we will be lying when we say we’re not missing Peter, that is why we tried the best we could not, to expose it to everyone that he’s out,” he said after the game.

“We know everybody knows how dependent we are on his ability to finish our chances and also to cause a lot of traps and to be the first line of defence with his high press and speed.

“That, to a certain extent had an effect on the whole team but we were consoling ourselves with the number of goals we scored prior to this match, in three matches but we knew for a fact, at some point, if we don’t take our chances we might be exposed that we don’t have a player of Peter Shalulile’s caliber.”
