Sukazi Calls On Big Clubs To Have Women’s Teams

TS Galaxy president Tim Sukazi has said the time has come for all professional clubs in South Africa to have women’s teams.

Sukazi was speaking at the SASOL League playoffs, where Galaxy were competing, but missed out on promotion after a draw and a loss in their opening two games.

But while Sukazi was there to support his club, he told journalists that his presence at the event was also because he felt it is time for all stakeholders to have women’s teams at their clubs.

“Look, my presence here is not necessarily about TS Galaxy alone, it’s about the agenda of women in this South African football context,” Sukazi said.

“I think the time has come whereby as stakeholders in the game, more especially clubs at the highest level, that we have ladies teams, participating in the space.

“I see no reason why we shouldn’t. So it cannot just be a [Mamelodi] Sundowns, TS Galaxy or now lately probably Royal AM, no, the entire league. I think it’s good for the development of women’s football in the country.”

So far, Sundowns and Royal AM are the only DStv Premiership clubs to have a women’s team in the Hollywoodbets Super League, while Galaxy’s side competes in the SASOL league.

Clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs have promised to also launch a women’s team in the near future, with CAF also requiring women’s teams from club’s who qualify for their interclub competitions from 2023 onwards.
