The Ingoboco cultural group held an ingoma on 8 August to welcome students to the second semester at the Tshwane University of Technology.

The group embraces Zulu traditional dances every quarter, with students from the Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, and Soshanguve campuses participating.

Different groups of traditional dancers come together to showcase their talents, and the event helps students focus on their roots when they are far from home and taking a break from their studies.

Danisa Makhubela, a third-year public finance student at the Ga-Rankuwa campus, said she has been attending Ingoboco events for two years, and the experience is always amazing.

“It is as if brothers and sisters from different households are meeting to embrace the love they share for their culture,” she said.

“Hearing them sing and watching them dance with pride is what being African is all about. It includes individuals from different cultures. I had fun and even learned many Zulu songs.”

Qiniso Msweli, leader of the Ingoboco cultural group who is doing a diploma course in accounting, said the aim of starting the group was to bring students together to share their cultural diversity at the university.

“We embrace our cultures and fight against tribalism and discrimination because we accommodate every culture,” he said.
