A student-teacher is in critical condition after being shot in the head at a Durban school shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen, the shooting occurred at a school in Durban’s Newlands West neighbourhood. “Just after 08:00 am on Tuesday morning, Emer-G-Med paramedics, together with Netcare911, responded to the scene of a shooting incident at a school in the Newlands West area of Durban,” Kyle van Reenen

On arrival, he stated that a man, a student-teacher, was discovered lying on the roadway next to a vehicle. He is believed to be around thirty years old. “Closer inspection found the man to have sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, and he was in a critical condition.”

Van Reenen said that emergency personnel worked tirelessly to stabilize the student-teacher before rushing him to a nearby hospital for further definitive care. “The circumstances surrounding the incident and the events preceding it are unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Services investigation,” he said.
