A 21-year-old man was arrested after police recovered a stolen red VW Polo following a chase through Cape Town on Sunday, 12 July 2026.

Western Cape police said Flying Squad members received information that the vehicle was travelling at high speed from Simon’s Town towards the N2. Officers later stopped it in Epping Industria 2.

Stolen VW Polo Stopped In Epping Industria

Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana told Daily Voice that Flying Squad members were patrolling when they received a complaint about the stolen VW Polo.

Police spotted the vehicle and gave chase. It came to a stop at the corner of Bofors Circle and Jakes Gerwel Drive in Epping Industria 2 at about 12:45.

Daily Voice reported that several police vehicles surrounded the scene as officers detained the driver. The report did not identify any other suspects linked to the recovered vehicle.

Mpendukana confirmed the arrest, saying: “A 21-year-old male suspect was arrested accordingly and the investigation continues.”

Elsies River Police Open Stolen Vehicle Case

Elsies River SAPS opened a case of possession of a stolen vehicle following the recovery of the red Polo.

However, police had not disclosed when or where the car was stolen, who owned it or whether investigators expected further arrests. They also did not provide the suspect’s identity or details of a court appearance.

The arrest does not amount to a conviction, and the stolen VW Polo case remains under investigation. Police had not announced any additional charges by publication time.

The latest national crime figures provide broader context. Official SAPS statistics covering 1 January to 31 March 2026 showed that property-related crimes, including theft of and from motor vehicles, fell by 8.5% compared with the same period a year earlier.

Still, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said crime levels remained “unacceptably high” despite decreases across several serious crime categories.

Police Account Remains Primary Confirmation

Daily Voice attributed the chase, arrest and stolen VW Polo recovery details directly to Mpendukana. Newsroom found no separate SAPS media statement or independent report confirming this specific incident by publication time.

Therefore, the incident details rely on the provincial police account published by Daily Voice. Elsies River police continue to investigate the possession of a stolen vehicle case.
