After admitting to raping and impregnating his 14-year-old daughter, a 37-year-old man was sentenced to five years direct imprisonment.
The unnamed man proposed that he serve a non-custodial sentence. Magistrate Toboshe of the Mitchells Plain Regional Court was not satisfied with the man’s plea and sentenced him to five years in prison as well as disqualifying him from possessing a firearm.

In his findings, he stated that the stepfather was in a position of trust, which he violated, and that the man’s name would be added to the National Sexual Offender’s Register. The State had also rejected the man’s and his legal representative’s Section 105 plea agreement.
After being arrested in 2019, the man pleaded guilty to statutory rape. The pregnancy was discovered by the teenager’s mother after she began to gain weight.
After becoming concerned about the teenager’s health, her family took her to the doctor, where they discovered she was pregnant.

The victim is now 17 years old, and her son is three.
In her statement, she explained how she had trusted her stepfather and how he had disappointed her and her family.
The teen expressed her embarrassment and humiliation at being forced to drop out of school. “After all this time that passed, I am not the same person,” read Ferguson from the statement.
