Stellenbosch enjoyed an impressive debut in the CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-0 win over Nsingizini Hotspurs in a first preliminary round match at Moses Mbhida Stadium on Saturday.

Andre de Jong grabbed the Cape Winelands side’s first-ever goal in continental football when he struck in the 35th minute.

Devin Titus then doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time while defender Fawaaz Basadien wrapped up victory with 19 minutes to go.

It was a convincing victory by the Maroons who now go into the second leg feeling comfortable from their advantage.

Stellenbosch were starting life without key players Deano van Rooyen and Iqraam Rayners who last week joined Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

They were also without Ivorian defender Ismael Toure who has been training with their reserve side after handing in a transfer request.

Goalkeeper Sage Stephens was making his 100th appearance for Stellies and wore the captain’s armband on an afternoon he started brilliantly by saving a well-taken Nsingizini freekick on 32 minutes.

But shortly after, De Jong connected a cross from Kyle Jurgens as Stellenbosch claimed the lead.

They then cushioned themselves with another goal off the boot of Titus who took advantage of some shambolic defending by their opponents from Eswatini.

10 minutes into the second half, the Maroons survived an attack by Hotspurs who came close from a freekick again.

New signing Lehlohonolo Mojela was then brought down inside the box and Basadien took the responsibility to convert a penalty to put the match beyond Nsingizini’s reach.

It became a memorable afternoon for Stellenbosch who now go into the second leg with more confidence next Saturday.
