Stellies Pay The Penalty Against Chiefs

Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana scored a hat-trick of penalties as Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal down to beat Stellenbosch 3-1 in their DStv Premiership fixture on Sunday afternoon at the DHL Stadium.

The first chance of the game fell to former Stellenbosch star Ashley Du Preez in the opening minute but he was denied by Sage Stephens. Du Preez had another opportunity in the fifth minute, but after being played in by Kgaogelo Sekgota, Du Preez shot straight at Stephens, who made a comfortable save. 

Stephens was back in action in the 10th minute, this time making the save at close range from Sekgota. Reeve Frosler’s attempt in the 21st minute was deflected behind. 

But the hosts would grab the lead, somewhat against the run of play, as Nhlanhla Mgaga pounced on a defensive error from Njabulo Blom, and neatly beat an out-of-position Itumeleng Khune to make it 1-0 in the 29th minute.

Chiefs were dealt a further blow in the 36th minute when Khune went down with a groin injury and was replaced by Brandon Petersen.

In the 44th minute, Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana had a half-chance, but his shot lacked power and Stephens saved.

Just before the break, Chiefs were awarded a controversial penalty for what was deemed a foul on Bimenyimana, much to the frustration of the Stellies players who felt it was a slip. The Chiefs striker picked himself up and beat Stephens to make it 1-1, and that is how the score remained at the half-time break.

Three minutes into the second half and Chiefs were awarded another penalty, this time for a handball. Caleb once again stepped up and made it 2-1 to Chiefs.

It went from bad to worse for Stellies, as a third penalty was awarded in the 55th minute. Rafiq De Goede was shown a red card for his foul on Bimenyimana, who stepped to score his third and complete his hat-trick of spot kicks.

Sinethemba Mngomezulu went wide on the hour mark, while substitute Devin Titus saw a shot deflected behind in the 72nd minute.

But Chiefs were able to manage the final few minutes, and while Stellies looked for a way back, the goals wouldn’t come, Njabulo Blom clearing off the line in stoppage time, and it ended 3-1 when the final whistle blew.

Chiefs move up to fourth on the table, while Stellies remain in sixth spot.
