Stellenbosch FC have rewarded head coach Steve Barker with a new long-term contract after some impressive work at the DStv Premiership outfit.
Barker became the club’s first head coach when they aquired the status of Vasco da Gama in the second-tier and led the club to win the league before solidifying their place in the DStv Premiership.
Rather than looking to avoid relegation, the Cape Winelands outfit has exceeded expecations working with a limited budget, contrary to popular belief over their ownership structure with a key emphaisis on youth development.
With the youngest squad in the league, Barker led Stellies to fourth place last season, narrowly missing out on CAF inter-club qualification, something that’s on the agenda for the club in the near future.
“Stellenbosch Football Club is delighted to announce that Steve Barker has signed a new contract with the club keeping him committed to SFC until 2026,” the club statement read on Thursday.
The former AmaTuks and AmaZulu coach has overseen nine games this season, with three wins, four draws and two defeats leaving them six points off league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and in sixth place.
