Stellenbosch completed a league double over Kaizer Chiefs as they won 1-0 in their DStv Premiership clash at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday evening.

While this is Stellies third season in the DStv Premiership, it was the first game at home in Stellenbosch at the DC Stadium with fans in attendance, and supporters from both teams packed the stand.

Stellenbosch 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs

The first attempt at goal came for the visitors in the 11th minute, but Njabulo Ngcobo was unable to keep his header down from Keagan Dolly’s corner kick.

But it was the home team who grabbed the lead in the 19th minute, as hometown boy Deano Van Rooyen, cheered on by the home support broke free, and Brandon Petersen was unable to keep his shot from going in.

It was almost two in the 24th minute, as Van Rooyen’s cousin Ashley Du Preez went narrowly wide from just inside the box.

After some nice interplay with Sabelo Radebe, Khama Billiat had a chance from the edge of the area, but his shot lacked power and went wide.

At half-time it remained 1-0 to the home team.

Five minutes into the second half Judas Moseamedi had a good chance to double the lead, but Petersen was able to close down the angle of the shot and make the save. Dolly’s long range attempt on the hour mark failed to trouble Sage Stephens.

Njabulo Ngcobo’s effort in the 79th minute was straight at Stephens, while substitute Dumisani Zuma, in his first appearance this season, forced Stephens into a save two minutes later.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was on target with his attempt in stoppage time, but Stephens pulled off the save to deny the Chiefs sub.

While Chiefs pushed hard for an equaliser, it was the home team who held on for the victory, as Chiefs lost their first fixture since Stuart Baxter’s departure as coach.
