Stellenbosch FC have claimed the Cape derby bragging rights after defeating Cape Town City 3-2 in a fiery DStv Premiership contest at Danie Craven Stadium on Friday night.

The visitors started the game like a house on fire, searching for an early goal.

Just five minutes into the mouthwatering showpiece, ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender, Lorenzo Gordinho broke the deadlock to give his side a lead.

CAPE TOWN CITY IN CONTROL AGAINST STELLENBOSCH FC

As the half progressed, the hosts failed to make use of their home ground advantage to dictate the showdown.

The Citizens put on a fantastic defensive show of class which was made of highly-rated players, talking about the likes of Marc van Heerden, Thami Mkhize, Taariq Fielies and Gordinho.

However, Steve Barker’s charges upped the ante from there on, but were guilty of wasteful finishing as they failed to find an equaliser despite several half chances.

The unfazed City never got discouraged, as they pushed forward in numbers with the hope of adding to the scoreline.

In the 41st minute of the clash, Darwin Gonzalez scored the second goal for the visitors.

Two minutes after the restart, Devin Titus pulled one back for Stellies.

The game went into the half-time break with City leading their arch-rivals with a 2-1 scoreline.

In the second stanza, the Winelands-based outfit tried to be the better side, but the Citizens stood their ground.

CAPE TOWN CITY WASTE THEIR LEAD ADVANTAGE

Barker’s boys restored parity in the 54th minute through Titus, who completed his brace.

Despite wasting their two goals advantage City continued put in a resilient defending performance to rebuff the efforts of the hosts’ striking force.

When we thought the game will end in a stalemate, Sinethemba Mngomezulu composed himself to fire Stellies into the lead.

The victory put an end to Stellenbosch’ nine-match winless streak.

As a result, Stellenbosch climb up the table to the 12th position with 20 points after 19 games.

Whereas City are placed seventh with 23 points from 18 outings.
