A Limpopo police officer, Rachel Shokane-Kutumela, 43, appeared in court on Friday, accused of killing people to claim insurance money.

The state opposed her bail.

Shokane-Kutumela is charged with six murders and around 17 cases of fraud.

She allegedly collected over R10 million from life insurance policies. The victims were poor individuals she knew, with the killings reportedly starting in 2019.

Police arrested her at Senwabarwana police station, near Polokwane, on Thursday.

“We are still busy with the investigations. The investigation will reveal who was helping her,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

“What we know is she preyed on destitute, disadvantaged, and mentally disturbed people.”

After the sergeant’s arrest, police questioned two other women. Some victims might be related to them, indicating either more involvement or additional victims.

The case will continue on 18 October.
