Stan – I Haven’t Received A Cent From Rayner’s Move Yet

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed why red-hot striker Iqraam Rayners didn’t play against his former side on Tuesday, saying that Stellenbsoch FC have not paid a cent for the player yet.

Rayners was part of the travelling party of Stellies against SuperSport at Absa Tuks Stadium on Tuesday, but watched the goalless draw from the stands.

In hindsight, coach Steve Barker was not going to risk him anyway as they have a huge Nedbank Cup semi-final match against Sekhukhune United at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday (18:00).

Rayners left SuperSport just before the January transfer window was closed, but he has been a breath of fresh air for Barker’s side, scoring nine league goals in eight appearances and six in three matches in the Nedbank Cup.

Matthews now admitted that it was part of the agreement that he wouldn’t play against his former side, since Stellenbosch asked for more time to pay his fee.

“Stellenbosch couldn’t give me all the money that I wanted for the player,” said Matthews during the club’s unveiling of the Huawei sponsorship.

“So in terms of our agreement with them and the payment plan that they could kind of accommodate towards me, paying the player off over time – like up to now I have not received a cent for the transfer of Rayners because they asked for some time before they could make the first payment, now that they are in the Nedbank Cup semi-final, now I think the time has come [to pay].

“The reality is that I was basically, in a way, doing a favour for Stellenbosch to give them the player before they have the capacity to pay for him.

“I didn’t feel that it was fair that I should be doing that and then having a player play against me when I’m effectively subsidizing some of his moves. That was the reason that we put that clause in the contract.

“Sorry about it, but if Stellenbosch paid me upfront there would have been no conditions attached and that would have been great.

“I understand what it is like to be a smaller club that can’t afford to pay and there are many times where I wish I could get payment terms.”

SuperSport signed Rayners from Stellies on free transfer, with the player signing a pre-contract just before the 2019/20 season officially ended.

Stellies decided to let him leave before that season ended even though FIFA allowed players to remain with their clubs after they had signed pre-contracts elsewhere as the season didn’t end in May but in September due to Covid 19.
