- SASSA is mandating COVID-19 SRD grant applicants to use a cell phone number registered in their own name to finalise their R370 application.
- The personal mobile number and matching banking details are essential for mandatory verification; failure to verify means no grant payment.
- This requirement is crucial to ensure the grant is paid to the correct person and serves as a key measure to combat fraudulent activity.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a vital reminder, urging all applicants for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant (R370) to ensure they use a mobile phone number registered explicitly in their own name when submitting their official application.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Agency emphasised that both the applicant’s personal mobile number and banking details are essential for the grant process.
Using a personal, verified mobile number is critical for successful verification and monitoring of the application, allowing applicants to receive vital notifications—including those required for a mandatory verification process.
Failure to complete this verification will result in an unsuccessful application and no payment.
SASSA stressed that this verification exercise is a crucial defence against fraudulent activity and ensures the grant is disbursed to the correct individual.
Specifically, the system cannot verify payment if the banking details provided do not belong to the applicant. Once both the personal mobile number and banking details are successfully verified and confirmed, the grant will be processed in the next payment run.
To prevent unnecessary delays, applicants are strongly advised to provide accurate information.
