Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has apologised after a video of him inhaling nitrous oxide went viral on Sunday.

Before later calling it a “severe lack of judgment”, the Mali international initially posted the video to his private Snapchat account.

Bissouma was pictured giggling between draws of laughing gas in a chauffeur-driven limousine less than a week before Spurs begin their Premier League campaign.

“I want to apologise for these videos. This was a severe lack of judgement,” Bissouma said in a statement on social media.

“I understand how serious this is and the health risks involved, and I also take my responsibility as a footballer and role model very seriously.”

Nitrous oxide, also known as “hippy crack”, is stored in canisters which are then used to fill balloons from which users inhale to gain a high.

Possession of laughing gas for recreational use is illegal in the UK due to usage carrying an array of risks, including heart attacks, strokes and brain damage.

Carrying the drug is a criminal offence; however conviction is only likely if there is clear intent to supply it to others.

Spurs and Bissouma will begin their season away to Leicester City on Monday 19 August.
