- Soweto and Roodepoort residents have been urged to stock up on water as Rand Water begins a 54-hour maintenance project.
- The planned work is expected to result in water outages from Tuesday morning until Thursday.
- The City says water tankers and collection points will be available, although full system recovery may take up to five days.
Johannesburg residents are preparing for three days of dry taps as Rand Water undertakes its third and final phase of planned maintenance over the next few days.
Although taps will be dry, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has assured residents that alternative water supply points will be made available during the maintenance period.
The bulk water entity is expected to begin the 54-hour maintenance at 4am on Tuesday, ending at 8am on Thursday.
The operation is likely to cause water disruptions in parts of Soweto and Roodepoort, prompting residents in the affected areas to stock up on water.
The City has also made water collection points available in impacted wards. Morero further cautioned that once the maintenance ends on 8 January, Johannesburg Water systems may take between three to five days to fully recover.
“Reservoir levels have been managed in advance, response teams are on standby, and alternative water will be supplied to affected communities through stationary and roaming tankers during the maintenance and recovery period,” Morero said.
He was speaking during a media briefing held by Rand Water on Monday afternoon.
