Soweto man designs luxury brand of bulletproof handbags

In a country where violent crime and gun-related incidents remain a harsh reality, Soweto entrepreneur Hlumelo Nyaluza is combining fashion, safety and social impact through an unusual innovation – luxury bulletproof handbags.

Nyaluza is the founder of HN Luxury, a proudly South African luxury brand producing handbags and backpacks designed to withstand bullets while celebrating African creativity and Xhosa heritage.

The entrepreneur says the idea came after a traumatic armed break-in at his Soweto home – an experience that sparked a desire to create something both beautiful and protective.

“Hence, I decided to create a luxury bag that is bulletproof,” Nyaluza told Stephen Grootes on the Money Show.

Fashion Meets Protection

The collection includes handbags and backpacks made with Kevlar, a lightweight, heat-resistant synthetic fibre commonly used in ballistic protection.

Despite their protective function, Nyaluza says the bags remain lightweight and fashionable.

To test their durability, the bags were reportedly put through live-fire testing by a South African champion shooter.

“They were shot at by a South African champion shooter, and the bullet didn’t go through three times,” he said.

The brand’s latest offering, the Bulletproof Shield Bag, joins products including the Signature Premium Box Bag and an HN backpack.

Inspired by Dreams and Heritage

Nyaluza says many of his business ideas come to him in dreams, often waking in the early hours of the morning inspired by new concepts.

The distinctive monogram featured on the bags was also dream-inspired and reflects his Xhosa heritage.

“Most of it is inspired by my purpose, and my tribe, which is the Xhosa tribe,” he said.

Determined to ensure premium craftsmanship, Nyaluza spent over a year searching for the right artisan partner, eventually selecting an African, French-trained craftsman after reviewing the work of around 20 artisans.

“I want them to stand out, and I want them to know that Africans can create beautiful things,” he said.

Business with Social Purpose

Beyond fashion, Nyaluza says the brand aims to empower survivors of gender-based violence.

Profits from the collection are being used to help survivors establish small businesses or expand existing ventures.

“Growing up, I realised my purpose on earth, which is to empower other people through my imagination,” he said.

Rapid Growth and Global Ambitions

Since January 2026, HN Luxury says the business has grown by 100%, driven by rising demand for premium “investment piece” handbags.

Nyaluza believes the incorporation of fine African art into the designs could see the bags appreciate in value over time.

“HN Hlumelo Nyaluza Luxury Bags could be the African answer to Hermès,” he said.

With products proudly made in South Africa, the brand’s ambition is to become Africa’s first globally recognised ultra-luxury fashion house – showcasing African creativity, heritage and craftsmanship on the world stage.
