Soweto derby | ONE Kaizer Chiefs star puts his hand up for FIFA World Cup selection

Kaizer Chiefs dented their rivals Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership title ambitions after holding them to a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested Soweto derby on Sunday.

The result could prove significant in the title race, with Orlando Pirates dropping two vital points as their battle with Mamelodi Sundowns looks set to go down to the wire.

For Kaizer Chiefs, however, it marked a strong response after their earlier 3-0 league defeat to Orlando Pirates this season.

Several Amakhosi players stepped up on the day, with one player in particular strengthening his case for Bafana Bafana selection.

KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS WHO IMPRESSED VS ORLANDO PIRATES

Brandon Petersen – 8.5/10

The Kaizer Chiefs captain delivered a commanding performance, leading by example in front of a packed FNB Stadium crowd.

Peterson produced six crucial saves and was instrumental in securing the draw, denying Orlando Pirates on multiple occasions.

His leadership stood out as he organised the defence, controlled the tempo with his distribution, and showed composure under pressure.

On a big stage, against strong opposition, he rose to the occasion. This is exactly the kind of performance that demands attention at national level.

Thabiso Monyane – 8/10

Facing his former club, Monyane delivered a disciplined and determined display.

Tasked with containing Relebohile Mofokeng, one of the league’s most in-form attackers, he executed his role effectively.

Monyane limited space, stayed tight in defensive duels, and showed resilience throughout. It was a performance that suggested he had a point to prove – and he proved it.

Wandile Duba – 7.5/10

Duba injected much-needed energy into the Kaizer Chiefs attack after coming on.

His movement, urgency, and willingness to take on defenders added a new dimension going forward.

He played with confidence and intent, offering a glimpse of his attacking potential.

PETERSEN MAKES HIS CASE FOR BAFANA BAFANA FIFA WORLD CUP SQUAD

Petersen’s display comes at an opportune time in the national team conversation.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos recently revealed that the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper was close to selection in the latest squad for the Panama friendlies.

With Ronwen Williams firmly established as first choice, the competition for back-up spots remains open.

Ricardo Goss has long held the role of second-choice goalkeeper, but the race behind Williams is tightening.

Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine – with an impressive 16 clean sheets this season – remains a strong contender.

However, after this derby performance, Petersen has firmly entered the conversation.

If he maintains this level, he could yet force his way into Hugo Broos’ plans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Watch out Renaldo Leaner and Chaine!

DO YOU THINK BRANDON PETERSEN DESERVES A SPOT IN HUGO BROOS’S FINAL BAFANA BAFANA FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 SQUAD?
