The English Football Association (FA) have advertised the job for the position of men’s head coach, and potential candidates must be capable of “winning a major tournament”.

Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role he occupied for almost eight years after the Three Lions were defeated by Spain in the final of Euro 2024. And candidates to replace him are already being identified.

The 53-year-old resigned on Tuesday, forcing the FA to begin their search for the man, or woman, that will bring major tournament success for the first time in almost six decades.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter and current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe are the current favourites to land the role; with foreign coaches Mauricio Pochettino and Ange Postecoglou also among the bookmakers’ favourites.

Despite the frontrunners stealing headlines in the rumour mill, the FA have made it clear that anyone who meets the requirements to apply has a shot at sitting in the hot seat.

“Our succession planning process has already identified a number of candidates; in addition to this we are committed to open recruitment processes in the football industry,” the role profile reads.

Among other conditions, the successful candidate must “have significant experience of English football, with a strong track record delivering results in the Premier League and/or leading international competitions.”

The role also entails that they “lead and develop the team to win a major tournament and be consistently ranked as one of the top teams in the world.”

The deadline for applications is 2 August, just over a month before the Three Lions are next in action against the Republic of Ireland in the Uefa Nations League.
