South African Families Still Awaiting US Resettlement

Posted on August 3, 2026

South African families approved for refugee resettlement in the United States remain uncertain about when they will leave the country.

According to News24, the successful applicants have completed the approval process but have not received confirmed travel dates or final information about where they will be placed.

The uncertainty has left families in a difficult position as they prepare to leave their homes and begin new lives abroad.

While they have been accepted into the US Refugee Admissions Programme, approval does not guarantee an immediate departure.

Destination details remain unclear

The families reportedly also do not know which US cities or states will become their new homes.

Refugees are generally placed according to available housing, support services and resettlement capacity.

However, the applicants featured in the report remain in South Africa while those arrangements are finalised.

They are now facing a waiting period with no clear indication of how long the process will take.

Despite the uncertainty, the families remain determined to relocate because they believe they will have better opportunities in the United States.

Programme targets selected South Africans

The US programme considers South African applicants who meet its stated eligibility requirements.

Applicants must be South African citizens and must show that they have experienced persecution or have a credible fear of future persecution based on a protected ground.

The programme has focused largely on Afrikaners and other racial minorities whom the US administration says may face race-based discrimination.

The South African government has repeatedly rejected claims that white citizens face state-sponsored persecution.

Waiting creates practical challenges

The lack of confirmed timelines can complicate major decisions involving employment, housing, schooling and personal finances.

Families preparing to relocate may be reluctant to make long-term commitments in South Africa while they wait.

At the same time, they cannot fully prepare for life in the US without knowing their destination or departure date.

For now, the approved applicants remain caught between two countries.

Their refugee status has been accepted, but the final step of physically starting their new lives in the United States remains uncertain.
