South Africa is once again on the brink of making history as the first African country to host the continent’s inaugural LIV Golf tournament.

The announcement was made in a recent press conference where it was revealed that Steyn City in Johannesburg is set to host the first-ever LIV Golf South Africa from 20-22 March 2026.

“Bringing LIV Golf to South Africa is another significant moment in our journey,” says Ross Hallett, LIV Golf Executive Vice President, Head of Events.

“The country has a proud sporting heritage with passionate fans and world-class talent, and Steyn City will be an incredible host venue to celebrate this next chapter. We currently have events in Asia, Europe, Australasia, North America, and today we add Africa, marking another exciting opportunity to showcase LIV Golf to a new audience and market.”

LIV Golf is a professional golf tour that aims to modernise the sport and attract new audiences. The league is structured as a team-based competition with both individual and team championships and features 14 events globally, with substantial prize money and a unique format that includes 54-hole tournaments and no cuts.

While most of the action happens on the course, providing entertainment for fans will be the top priority.  With post–play concerts being synonymous with LIV Golf events, they promise to deliver top-class entertainment by creating a festival experience.

This is not only a multi-year commitment that will ensure that the sport grows to exponential heights within the country, but it is also significant for the League itself, which will now extend its competition across five continents.

Giving Back

Also competing at the event will be some of our own homegrown talent, team Stingers GC captained by 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen and featuring fellow countrymen Dean Burmester, Branden Grace, and 2011 Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel. The group will be eager to capitalise on their home ground advantage to secure success.

Speaking on what this means to him, Louis said: “It’s always special to compete at home, and I’m incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time. For Branden, Charl, Dean and I to play in front of our fans, friends, and families will be an unforgettable experience.

He added: “South African sports fans love their golf, and I am sure they will turn out in large numbers to support Stinger GC. South Africa has given so much to us, and now we get to give something back.”

Boost Tourism

Meanwhile, Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture Gayton McKenzie described this as a proud moment for the country. He added that this will provide international guests with an authentic African experience where they can explore the beauty of nature and the Big Five, but also enjoy the luxury that Steyn City has on offer.

“We are excited to work with LIV Golf’s team to deliver a festival of sport and culture that will inspire fans, boost tourism, and create lasting opportunities for our communities, because LIV has committed to reinvesting into the countries that welcome them,” the Minister said.
