South Africa has been plunged into mourning following the death of legendary actor and theatre giant Seputla Sebogodi, whose remarkable talent graced the country’s stages and television screens for more than five decades.

The beloved performer died on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, after suffering complications related to diabetes, his family confirmed in a statement released on Thursday.

“It is with profound sadness that the immediate family of Seputla Sebogodi confirms his passing on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes,” the family said.

As relatives begin the painful journey of saying goodbye, they have appealed for privacy while they grieve the loss of a devoted father, family member and one of South Africa’s most respected artistic figures.

For generations of South Africans, Sebogodi was more than just an actor. He was a gifted storyteller whose unforgettable performances became part of the country’s cultural fabric, leaving audiences inspired by every role he brought to life.

His unmistakable presence lit up television productions such as Generations, Suburban Bliss, Bophelo ke Semphego, Redemption and, most recently, Scandal!, where his performances once again reminded viewers of his extraordinary talent.

Long before television made him a household name, Sebogodi had already established himself as a towering figure in South African theatre. Productions including Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial, Once a Pirate and Mooi Street Moves showcased the depth of his artistry and earned him admiration from audiences and fellow performers alike.

Reflecting on the enormous loss, the family said: “Seputla Sebogodi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in South African theatre and television.”

They added: “His legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched.”

The heartbreaking news comes only days after Sebogodi was forced to dismiss hurtful rumours circulating on social media suggesting that he had fallen on hard times. He explained that a widely shared photograph had simply been taken while he was working on a film set and expressed disappointment over the false claims about his wellbeing.

As news of his passing spreads, tributes are expected to flood in from actors, directors, producers, friends and countless fans whose lives were enriched by his extraordinary career. South Africa has lost not only an exceptional performer but also a cultural treasure whose influence will continue to inspire generations to come.

The Sebogodi family said details of his memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared at a later stage.
