A 21-year-old man allegedly killed his mother, poured acid on her, and then fed parts of her body to dogs on Saturday near Mthatha.
A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named because of the ongoing investigation, said the mother video-called her during the attack, showing that her son was beating her.
The call suddenly ended, and the neighbour didn’t hear from the woman again that night.
When the neighbour had no word from her on Sunday, she became worried and alerted the community on Monday.
The community confronted the son, and he admitted the crime.
“He said he beat her to death, cut up her body, and put it on a mattress before pouring acid on it and setting it on fire,” the neighbour said.
The woman said she noticed a large fire behind the dead woman’s house on Saturday night, which she now believes was the son burning his mother’s body.
The son allegedly told neighbours that he checked to see if her body had completely burned. When he found some flesh and bones left, he fed the flesh to dogs and buried the bones.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli confirmed that the son was arrested on Monday.
“Police were called to a murder scene in Marhambeni, near Mthatha. At the scene, they found the burned body of a woman in the debris outside what is believed to be her house.”
Nkohli said police are investigating, and the suspect is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon.
